A History of Illinois

-----------------------------------

From Its Commencement as a State
in 1818 to 1847

-----------------

Governor Thomas Ford.

(Originally Published In 1854.)

This addition is interesting for a couple of reasons. Gov. Ford was the Governor of Illinois during the time the Latter-Day Saints were living in Nauvoo. He gives a different point of view concerning the deaths of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum. His story is a story of a man stuck in the middle of two extreme forces in the State. The Mormons and the very active Anti-Mormons, both of which could be very violent at times. The Gov. being on neither side, is forced to make some very hard decisions in order to keep peace in the State.

The whole book covers many topics, the Mormons just being one of them. Because of this, I'm only reprinting the chapters that concern them. I hope you find it interesting. I want to give a special thanks to Mike Davenport for giving me his copy of this book so that it is available for anyone to read and learn the whole story for themselves.
